Abstract

Abstract This study is conducted in Elobied town, North Kordofan state; it deals with the new dimension in reference service systems in the libraries and information centers with special respect to University of Kordofan. The study is conducted for PhD in library sciences and infonnation. The supervisor was Dr. Gasim Uthman N0ur- the year (2005. -2008). The study follows the descriptive method applying its two diversions; the analytical one and the case study. Which depends on field studies to achieve its objectives. It uses the questionnaire as a tool for data collection, and then data analyzed to answer the study hypothesis. The study selected a sample from those who benefit from the services provided by university of Kordofan libraries whose number was (400) from both males and females; (teaching staff). In addition to students of final year from faculties of Medicine, Natural Resources and Environmental studies, Science, Engineering, Arts, Education and Commerce whose number is (1601) because they need the library more than the others concerning within researches and papers which is apart of the programme and requirements of final year. (10%) was taken from the total number of the sample through “simple random sample” because no differences according to the specializations and the need for information services. The total percentage was (200) and responded (100%). The questionnaire was analyzed then through (SPSS) which is a common The study tries to find out about the present situation in University of Kordofan libraries according to library collections available, professional and trained librarians, and technological infrastructures, in addition to the services provided, and to what extent it is acceptable to the users. The study also makes a rational comparison and contrast between the group of libraries in University of Kordofan and libraries in other Sudanese universities; namely (Khartoum, Elnilein and Algazeera) universities. This is due to quantity and quality of library users. The study has found the following problems: 1. Absence of all types of catalogs in the library. 2. Absence of professional regular training. 3. Weakness of technological infiastiucture and so weakness in services. 4. No data basis and so weakness in services. 5. No prepared and written plans to direct and guide library uses. 6. Weakness of budget affects library activities. 7. Absence of current services and transmission of selected information. 8. Weakness of cultural activities that reflect on library awareness and responsibility towards its society. The study has proposed recommendations to solve weakness that libraries of University of Kordofan suffer from, so as to cope with development and progress of modem libraries, and to play the modern role towards visitors and users. These recommendations are: 1. Libraries should have integrated and rich references for educational and post graduate studies. 2. Collection of libraries should be organized by indexing, classification, cataloging, listing and making abstracts and bibliographies. 3. Computerizing the libraries of the university; priority should be given to that in the plans of library administration. 4. A positive co-operation should take place between library administration, staff and students of university. 5. Libraries should provide with modern and up-to-date information such as current services, selected transmission of information and media service. 6. Students and researchers should be trained on how to use the library. 7. Data basis for library collections should be founded through the local gates of the library. 8. Making a fixed and enough financial support for libraries from the budget of the university. 9. In their different fields and specialization libertarians should be trained and their professional standards should be improved. l0.Comprehensive and studied plans should be provided to improve the university libraries.
