Abstract

Abstract This thesis tackles the Arabic expression ol‘ “ldrab” (Turning Away or Digressing) or what is known in Arabic grammar as the (~.1U~b¥‘ ~.-ulwi), as in the Qur'an, both grammatically and rhetorically. The study throws light on such stylistic phenomenon, by which the syntax or one of its elements is usually limited in meaning. The study is made in four chapters: Chapter One: is devoted to the terminology. Chapter Two: is devoted to the study of the situations of the article " Ba!" (J2), the tnain article usually used to express the “ldrab”. .. Chapter Three: is devoted to the study of the article “ Am” or as known in Arabic (H), which denotes the “ldrab”. Chapter Four: is about the study o fthe article “ Am” or as known in Arabic as (J), which denotes the ldrab and substitute digression or (Badal ldrab), which is classified as one o fthe types of the Different Badal. Most Important Results: - The ldrab (Digression) makes the speaker turn away (or digress) from thefirst meaning to the following one. This turning away of “digression” is usually conducted by either ol‘ the two types of the ldrab: the “Re vocational” or "Transformational”. lt has been proved statistically that the Quadratic verses including the transformational ldrab are more than those of the Revocational ldrab. - It is also proved that when the articles ol‘ ldrab precede a sentence, they add the meaning ol beginning in addition to either transformational or revocational ldrab, and when they precede a single word they just denote the ldrab. - Throughout the practical study, many usages and meanings of the ldrab articles have been demonstrated.
