Abstract

ABSTRACT |~ This study is concerned with the presentation of the general characteristics and socioeconomic implications of transport sector in Sudan. Which is considered as the basic pivot of the economic situation and one of the main pillars for any national economy .It links the parts of the country together, as well as linking it with outside world .On the other hand, the study deals with transport sector in the Sudan and its importance, focusing on air transport showing its role, problems and obstacles. It also displays the economic factors and policies of the stale and their impacts on air transport. The study concentrates on Sudan Airways, the national carrier, which links Sudan intemally and extemally through its services. The study presents the important role played by Sudan Airways and its activities in local and intemational air transport market. The study also investigates the problems that lead to discrepancies in Sudan Airways performance in comparison with the local and international carriers. The study provides a comprehensive analysis of traffic data of the company, which there based on several factors that influence passenger and cargo traffic models. It also determines the relationship between variables assigned to each model, and determines their scopes, which are important in the process of viability and rehabilitation of the company. E The study resulted in different findings mainly the problems facing transport sector in Sudan showing weaknesses in the local and international Air carriage shortage in the capital invested in this field, leak of the international companies operating in the field of air transport, weakness of the local carriers, which focus only on the cargo transportation. The study also discusses the privatization of Sudan Air ways by offering it to investors inside and outside Sudan whether these are organizations, companies or individuals. j The passenger traffic during the study period can be represented by linear formula with per capita income available, inflation and exchange rate. These entire variables have significant effects on passenger traffic and explain 72% of passenger traffic, while 94% can be]. attributed to government policies, tastes customs etc... The cargo traffic during the period of the study can be represented by linear equation with GDP, custom, export‘, and import and excise duties. All these variables are of insignificant influence on cargo traffic. It explains 72% of the traffic while 66% can be attribute." to inconsistency in policies. The study recommends the introduction of new variables that can influence Demand on air transport in order to achieve the national goals of economic development these can be done establishing appropriate policies capable of increasing the GDP. And experts eaming. These will reflect positively on passenger and cargo traffic. The study also stresses the importance of seeking the assistance of expert in the field of air transport to help put forward policies for the privatization of airline and air transport services.
