Abstract

ABSTRACT The problem of food security in Sudan is attributed to the possibility of access to food more than availability of food for poor families in both rural and urban areas. It is a problem of consumption in areas suffering lack of food and malnutrition, especially in southern states and areas where the situation is very critical due to the long lasin conflict and war, as well as areas where people are suffering lack of food seEfiT_i't% such as the displaced, refugees and the poor in both rural and urban areas. There is also a close relation between the poor, the hungry and malnutrition, the best example for that is the so-called “famine of Wau \-M”, following the rebellion of Karbino forces which revealed the extent of deterioration of food situation in these areas (Bahr El Ghazal) and manifested this phenomenon internationally (repeated famine and semi-famine) and include it in the food security sphere which resulted generally from various reasons and problems that are natural or caused. But poverty is considered to be the main cause of lack of food security as well as other causes such as terrorism, corruption, tribal conflict, and environment deterioration. This research aims at attaining reliable data on production and consumption that is why this data was collected with accuracy, honesty and seriousness and manifested that Sudan is suffering a great shortage of data concerning terminal states such as the South, where they depend on the system of (AAS) Agricultural Assessment Statistics time sequences in the sorghums (dura) crop for the period from which depends mainly on the general agricultural survey (annually/seasonally) conduced by the Ministry of Agriculture and FAO. But they are just estimated figures not of that accuracy concerning consumption as well as they are the only estimations present currently ' s the per capita consumption in the northern states to . They estimate about \<.'\ kilograms yearly, while the per capita consumption in the Southern states is amounted to '\\ kilograms yearly. The animal consumption amounted to 0‘/. of the production which assists the individual in the Southern states to fall within the food shortage circle, without any means of avoiding that for problems unidentified, whether they are due to the war or poverty or others. It is worth mentioning that statistics and agricultural drafts were very costly, but as the states and their governments are much occupied with political problems all efforts leading to comprehensive, partial and specialized statistics were aborted, but there is still a hope that the state will pay much attention to statistics for provision of economic information and data and achieving the expected comprehensive development and peace.
