Abstract

Abstract Foreign trade plays a significant role in the national economy of any country. " Developing countries as far as the Sudan is concern depends heavily on production and exportation of few primary products and imports capital, intermediate goods, as far as sometimes consumption goods. In recent years, Sudan exports were diversified and then played a significant role in national income. The theoretical framework, regarding the export promotion and import substitution was studied, as well as the foreign trade and exchange rate policies. Time series, secondary data covered the period from 1990 to 2002 and primary and descriptive method were used. The objectives of the study were to examine the effects of foreign trade on national income. The study concluded that, dependence on the exportation of primary products, and the imports of capital, intermediate, and sometimes consumption goods led to balance of trade deficit but in recent years and as a result of exportation of petroleum there was a surplus in trade balance. Finally, the foreign trade plays a positive role in national income.
