Abstract

Abstract This study aims to show information retrieval system adopted by the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) and the Sudanese Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC) and sheds light on computer capabilities for information search and retrieval. This has been done through diligent study of the efficiency, advantages and disadvantages of the traditional and automated information systems. The study also aims at investigating how such systems able to cope with information flow and development in general and in the field of agriculture in particular. The research focuses on the information systems used in (AOAD and (ARC), their software, stafi" and users service the light of universal standards. Several research methodologies have been used namely, historical and the descriptive in addition to the comparative and the statistical methods as well. For data processing, frequencies and percentages are used to analyze and display information. The most important findings of the research are the following: - There is a similarity in the selected information sources in (AOAD) and (ARC) especially the electronic information sources, for instance, (CD-ROMS). Both (A OAD) and (ARC) applied standards tools for organizing information sources and this is a positive indicator for activating cooperation between two institutions. They also provide traditional information services, such as library loans, reference guide as well as using CD-ROMS for infiarmation retrieval. - There is user satisfaction of information service provided in (AOAD) and (ARC). The study provides some recommendations hoping that they would Help to improve and develop information retrieval services. These recommendations are: - There must be specified separate budgets for the information unit in the two institutions so as to assist in acquiring materials suitable for users. - T o increase the library working hours because the time currently allowed for the services is inadequate in the light of the large number of users, and this requires additional wages for the working staff - To make use of information technology in processing, storage, retrieval, dissemination and exchange of information. - There should be an obvious policy for information planning agricultural sector as part of the national information policy. - The (ARC) should set up standards and techniques for information sources so as to facilitate cooperation and exchange of infinrmation.
