Abstract

Abstract The research aims at highlighting the ‘application of the Operations Research (OR) tools and techniques at the industrial organizations, specifically at Kenana Sugar Oompany (KSC) . Also, the research endeavours to pinpoint the obstacles which hindered the utilization of the OR techniques at Kenana . The major research question is : what is the role of operations research tools and techniques in improving the performance of the industrial organizations ? To answer _this qiuestion, the following hypotheses were developed : 1- there is a relationship between the utilization of OR techniques at KSC and the degree of awareness of managers with these techniques . 2- the utilization of OR techniques helps improve the performance of the company . 3- there is a positive relationship between‘ using computers and the effectiveness of OR application . 4- the lack of the appropriate tools as well as the absence of conducive environment are among the major reasons that undermined the application of OR techniques_ To test the hypotheses the researcher used the case study methodology. SPSS is utilized to analyze the data. Measures of central tendancy and dispersions are used and chi-squire are used to measure the relationship between variables . ' The most important results are : l- The managers at KSC are unaware of the tools and techniques of OR . ' _ 2- Linear Programming (the Graphical method) is the most utilized OR technique at KSC . 3- The major obstacle that obscure the application of OR at KSC is the lack of awareness about the tools . 1 - 4- Computer utilization might enhance the application of OR techniques . Based on the above mentioned results, the researcher recommends the followings : -

l-KSC should conduct training programmes in the field of OR and how to use computer soflware . _ 2-It is recommended to use other OR techniques rather than just linear programming in areas of decision — making and transportation. I ' 3-KSC should encourage its personnel to use quantitative methods of decision - making .
