An Evaluation of Vocabulary Load in SPINE 2 for Seventh Class Pupils in Basic Level Schools

Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to evaluate the vocabulary load of Sudan Practical Integrated National English (SPINE) Pupil's Book 2, which is being taught to the pupils of the seventh class in the Basic Level Schools.

The vocabulary items in all the five units of SPINE Pupil's Book 2, have been counted in order to identify their size. An online computer programme is used to identify how the vocabulary items of SPINE 2 relate to the British National Corpus (BNC) first 1000 and second 1000 word frequency lists. Moreover, the times of occurrences of each vocabulary item, have been counted to determine whether each item has been given chances to be recycled.

The researcher has chosen ten words from the most recycled words to find out if the vocabulary items are presented with particular length of time or not. In addition, a test has been given to a sample of seventh class pupils, to find out whether they are able to use the vocabulary items that they have been expected to acquire by the end of their school year.

By the end of the data analysis, it is found that the total number of the vocabulary items in SPINE Pupil's Book 2 is 484 words, 235 words out of them are found in the first 1000 BNC word frequency list and 136 words are found in the second 1000 BNC word frequency list. In addition, 113 words from the total words of SPINE 2 are not found in the first 1000 and the second 1000 BNC word frequency lists. It is noticed that 57% from the total words of SPINE 2 have been given chances to be recycled, and 43% of the total words have not been given chances to be recycled at all. The findings reveal that 76 words from the total of the vocabulary items have appeared only one time after their first appearance.

The findings show that 53% of the pupils are able to use the vocabulary items that they have been expected to acquire by the end of their School Year, and 47% of them are not able to use the same items. Finally, the researcher has offered some important and useful recommendations and suggestions.

تهدف هذه الدراسة الي تقييم المفردات اللغوية في كتاب التلاميذ الثاني للغة الانجليزية من سلسلة منهج اللغة الانجليزية ، السوداني القومي العملي المتكامل ، والذي يتم تدريسه لتلاميذ الصف السابع بمدارس مرحلة الأساس. يتكون كتاب التلاميذ الثاني من سلسلة منهج اللغة الانجليزية ، السوداني القومي العملي المتكامل من خمس وحدات. قام الباحث بحساب المفردات الموجودة في تلك الوحدات لتحديد كميتها، ولمعرفة صلة هذه المفردات بالمدونة القومية البريطانية، تم استخدام برنامجا عن طريق الحاسوب، حيث يقوم البرنامج بتصنيف المفردات المدخلة اليه وفقا لقائمتي الألفي كلمة الأكثر تكرارا بحسب المدونة القومية البريطانية .

وجد الباحث أن العدد الكلي للمفردات الجديدة في كتاب التلاميذ الثاني هو 484 مفردة ، منها 235 مفردة وجدت في قائمة الألف كلمة الأولي الأكثر تكرارا في المدونة القومية البريطانية ،و136مفردة وجدت في قائمة الألف كلمة الثانية ،وأن 113مفردة غير موجودة في القائمتين.تم حساب مرات التكرار لكل مفردة لتحديد عدد الكلمات التي تم استخدامها لمرات أخري بعد أول ظهور لها في الكتاب ، كما أنه تم اختيار عشر مفردات ، من بين الكلمات التي حظيت بتكرار أكثر في الكتاب ،للتأكد من أنها عرضت بطريقة منتظمة وفقا لمدي زمني محدد .لاحظ الباحث أن57%من مجموع كلمات الكتاب قد تم استخدامها لمرات أخري بعد أول ظهور لها في الكتاب ،بينما 43%من مجموع كلمات الكتاب لم تعط فرصا للاستخدام لمرات أخري بعد ظهورها الأول.

أظهرت نتائج هذه الدراسة أن 76 كلمة من مجموع المفردات قد ظهرت مرة واحدة فقط بعد أول ظهور لها في الكتاب.

أجري الباحث اختبارا لعينة من تلاميذ الصف السابع لمعرفة مدي تمكنهم من استخدام المفردات ، والتي من المتوقع أن تتم معرفتها بنهاية عامهم الدراسي . كشفت الدراسة أن 53% من التلاميذ قادرون علي استخدام مفردات الكتاب ، بينما 47% منهم لا يستطيعون استخدام تلك المفردات.

أوصي الباحث في الختام ببعض التوصيات المهمة ، كما اقترح بعض الاقتراحات، و التي من المتوقع أن تساهم ايجابا في تعلم اللغة.
