Abstract

Abstract This study attempts to descirbe and analyize the impact of UN projects in the areas designated for sustainable development. l-lowever, lower Atbara River development project has been chosen as acase study. lnorder to determine the scale of development operations , the researcher has come up with the following questions : l. The lower River Atbara Development scheme has helped in the reduction of poverty in the area. 2. People's participation leads to effective decisions , setting of priorities and in crease in the DNP. 3. the researcher has adopted a historical method to answer these questions by\followillg up the development of these projects and their participation in sustainable rural development. Inorder to abtain some statistics which I support the analytical aspect , the study has adopted aquantative approach ;by using the social survey method where the questiomiaircs , were distrbuted 011 a group of bread winners at the study area, and the research has been supported by some interviews with officials and non officials The study has were come up with follwing important resuelts: Al there are factors that responsible for poverty e.g low income , low educational level and environmental deterioration B/ abmpt stoppage of the scheme before it would come to its final stage . This would undermine the philosophy of designated projects( Botton up approach) in which the decision was Top-Down. The questions which have been raised by the study which should be similarly stressed by the researchers. Is that: the logistical support institutes alarge portion of a UNDP budget. This has undermine the effectiveness of funding.
