Abstract
This study attempts mainly to investigate and analyze the characteristics of
urbanization and its impact on the kinship relations in Sudan using
household survey data from Dioum Sharqia area in central Khartoum and
which was chosen as a case study to test research hypotheses.
To achieve the research objectives, the researcher used qualitative and
quantitative methods. The study is based on a random systematic sample of
(260) households from Dioum Sharqia, which the researcher believes that it
is a representative sample of the population of the study. Data were collected
via means of direct observations, and ‘with questionnaire which was designed
carefully to reflect the key concepts of the study and its main dimensions.
The study found that, urbanization does not inevitably lead to a weaker
kinship ties, and it also stressed that the length of stay plays a role in the
strength of kinship relations. The study also revealed the existence of the
phenomenon that immediate relatives sharing same housing, which reflects
the prevalence of solidarity among members of same kinship.
The study recommends that there is an urge need for further research to be
conducted in Dioum Sharqia society, specifically dealing with social change,
which is expected to have affected those families who sold their houses and
moved to the new extensions in Khartoum State.
