John Steinbeck’s Call for Self-improvement Represented by Ma Joad in “The Grapes of Wrath”

Abstract

Abstract Steinbeck's Call for Self-improvement Represented by Ma Joad in "The Grapes of Wrath" This study aims to introduce the American novelist John Steinbeck for Sudanese readers of world literature through analyzing his novel "The Grapes of Wrath". The researcher examines Ma Joad character as an embodiment of the author's theme of self-improvement. To investigate this idea, the researcher employs concepts and principles of social and literary thoughts such as Emersonian oversoul and pragmatism. These principles enable the researcher to examine Ma Joad's relations with other characters as well as understand and follow the progress of Ma's character. The researcher finds out that Ma Joad is introduced as a model of a woman who is needed to solve economic and social problems. Ma possesses traits that are necessary for the individual to adapt him/herself to struggle through the hard situations for a better future مســـــتخلص البحـــــث

دعـــوة جـــون ستايـنبك لتـطويـر الذات مُمـثلة بالأُم (مــــا جـــود) فـي روايــة "عناقيــــد الغــضب"

تهدف هذه الدراسة لتقديم الروائي الأمريكي جون استينبك وذلك بتحليل روايته "عنـاقيـد الغضـب". تفحصت الباحثة شخصية (مـا جـود) كتمثيل لفكرة الكاتب(تطوير الذات). لتفسير وتوضيح هذه الفكرة إستخدمت الباحثة مفاهيم ومبادئ لأفكار إجتماعية وأدبية كالإمرسونية (Emersonianism) و البراغماتيكية (Pragmatism). ساعدت هذه المفاهيم الباحثة علي دراسة علاقات الشخصية موضوع الدراسة مع الشخصيات الأخري كما ساعدت الأفكار علي فهم وتتبع تطور شخصية (مـا جـود). توصلت الباحثة إلي أن (مـا جـود) قُدمت كنموذج لإمرأة تمتلك صفات ضرورية لتأقلم الفرد وكفاحِه خلال الظروف الصعبة لمستقبل أفضل وكإمرأة يحتاج إليها المجتمع كحل للمشكلات الإجتماعية والإقتصادية.
