Difficulties of Using Defining and Non-Defining Relative Clauses among Second Level Students Learners of English at Al-Neelain University

Abstract

Abstract This study aims at investigating the difficulties that face English learners of the second level, at Al-Neelain University- Faculty of Arts for academic year (2016) ; in using relative clauses ‘defining and non-defining’ because, of the importance of this theory in Linguistics field through a test that is performed upon (40) students; the test consists of three items,the first item discusses the major types of relative clauses ‘defining and non-defining’. The second item – discusses the meanings of the major types of relative clauses ‘defining and non-defining’, and the third item discusses the correct usages of the major types of relative clauses ‘defining and non-defining’. The researcher follows statistical analysis (SPSS) Statistical Package for Social Science to analyze the test results, then the researcher reaches that there are difficulties face the students – these difficulties vary but, the highest difficulty in identifying the major types of relative clauses thus, the researcher recommends there should be more concentrations in teaching relative clauses theory to improve learners’ four skills. Abstract (Arabic Version) المستخلص تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى معرفة الصعوبات التي تواجه طلاب الفرقة الثانية كلية الآداب لغة انجليزية بجامعة النيلين للعام (2016) في استعمال الجملة الموصولة بنوعيها الرئيسيين المقيدة والغير مقيدة وذلك لأهمية هذه النظرية في الحقل اللغوي وذلك من خلال اختبار اجري لعدد (40) طالب ويتكون الاختبار من ثلاثة محاور. المحور الأول ناقش الأنواع الرئيسية الجملة الموصولة بنوعيها الرئيسيين المقيدة والغير مقيدة. المحور الثاني ناقش معاني الجملة الموصولة المقيدة والغير مقيدة. المحور الثالث ناقش الاستعمال الصحيح للجملة الموصولة المقيدة والغير مقيدة. لتحليل نتائج هذا الاختبار اتبع الباحث تحليلا إحصائياً يسمى (الحزمة الإحصائية للعلوم الاجتماعية) وتوصل إلى أن الطلاب يواجهون صعوبات وهذه الصعوبات تتفاوت ولكن الصعوبة الأكثر تكمن في التعرف على النوعين الرئيسيين للجملة الموصولة وفي نهاية هذا البحث أوصى الباحث بتدريس هذه النظرية في المهارات الأربعة لتحسين الطلاب .
