Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study represents one of the scientific studies in
Urban geography for a city which is now considered one of
the largest cities in Sudan as regards the area and the
commercial and administrative importance. Though it had
been until the fifties of this century avillage with shanty
dwellings and slums together with cattle corrals at the
western outskirts of Omdunnan. The study, however, tackles
the different natural and human elements that lead to the
emergence of such large and important city.
_ The research worker follows here the descriptive
approach in addition to the deductive and inference
approach for the review of geographical facts enshrined in
the third chapter (Natural Elements) and the fifth chapter
(Urban Morphology). He adopts the methodology of direct
observation and the studying of the maps of the city. He also
uses "the statistical methods in illustrating and analyzing the
data on human traits of city dwellers particularly in the
fourth chapter : (population) and the part concerning the city
problems within the fifth chapter — through the historical
approach.
' As for field study, this has relatively taken along time
to the large area of the city and the dispersion of its living
quarters, added to the scantily of information and data or the
lack of them despite the fact that they are indispensable for
such a research.
The research worker, however, under the
circumstances, deemed it inevitable to resort to
questionnaires and conduct opinion polls as well as
interviews for senior officials and employees. Moreover, the
author conducted tours and visits to the residential quarters
and environs of the city and the adjacent regions with the
aim of accomplishing a satisfactory field study. The author,
however, referred to many references, periodicals, statistics,
publications and maps — something which has enabled him
to acquire correct and precise information and data on the
city and the region at large.
The study comprises six chapters as follows : the first
chapter which includes the prelude, the second chapter
which includes the theoretical framework, the third chapter
which tackles the natural elements for Ombadda City, the
forth chapter which includes a detailed study of the
population of the city, the fifth chapter which reviews the
urban morphology of the town and lastly the sixth chapter
which studies the City region . The study then, sums up by
the conclusions and recommendations. ,
_ However, all the chapters of the study are
supplemented with statistical tables, graphic diagrams, maps
and photos for the city . These chapters as a whole represent
a comprehensive study on the geography of Ombadda City .
