Abstract

ABSTRACT This study represents one of the scientific studies in Urban geography for a city which is now considered one of the largest cities in Sudan as regards the area and the commercial and administrative importance. Though it had been until the fifties of this century avillage with shanty dwellings and slums together with cattle corrals at the western outskirts of Omdunnan. The study, however, tackles the different natural and human elements that lead to the emergence of such large and important city. _ The research worker follows here the descriptive approach in addition to the deductive and inference approach for the review of geographical facts enshrined in the third chapter (Natural Elements) and the fifth chapter (Urban Morphology). He adopts the methodology of direct observation and the studying of the maps of the city. He also uses "the statistical methods in illustrating and analyzing the data on human traits of city dwellers particularly in the fourth chapter : (population) and the part concerning the city problems within the fifth chapter — through the historical approach. ' As for field study, this has relatively taken along time to the large area of the city and the dispersion of its living quarters, added to the scantily of information and data or the lack of them despite the fact that they are indispensable for such a research. The research worker, however, under the circumstances, deemed it inevitable to resort to questionnaires and conduct opinion polls as well as interviews for senior officials and employees. Moreover, the author conducted tours and visits to the residential quarters and environs of the city and the adjacent regions with the aim of accomplishing a satisfactory field study. The author, however, referred to many references, periodicals, statistics, publications and maps — something which has enabled him to acquire correct and precise information and data on the city and the region at large. The study comprises six chapters as follows : the first chapter which includes the prelude, the second chapter which includes the theoretical framework, the third chapter which tackles the natural elements for Ombadda City, the forth chapter which includes a detailed study of the population of the city, the fifth chapter which reviews the urban morphology of the town and lastly the sixth chapter which studies the City region . The study then, sums up by the conclusions and recommendations. , _ However, all the chapters of the study are supplemented with statistical tables, graphic diagrams, maps and photos for the city . These chapters as a whole represent a comprehensive study on the geography of Ombadda City .
