Abstract

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are non-hematopoietic multipotent cells able to self-renewal and to differentiate into several mesenchymal lineages.ln recent years, there seems to be an unbolfided interest conceming lllSCs, this is mainly attributed to their exciting characteristics including long-term er Vim proliferation, multiline age potentiality and immunomodulatory properties. ln this regard, lllSCs emerge as attractive candidates for various therapeutic applications especially for the treatment of a range of diseases that are not curable by current therapies. ll'lSCs were originally isolated from the bone marrow (BM) and this population is still considered as the gold standard for MSC. applications. Nevertheless, the Blll has several limitations as source of ll'lSCs, including MSC low frequency in this compartment, the painful isolation procedure and the decline in MSC characteristics with donor's age. Thus, there is accumulating interest in identifying altemative sources for lllSCs. To this end, ll'lSCs obtained from the Wharton's Jelly (WJ) and umbilical cords blood (UCB) have gained much attention over the last years since they can be easily isolated, without any ethical
