The Impact of Motivation on The Achievement in English language among Science & Technology Students (Case study – Second Year)

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of motivation on students’ achievement in English language, at the Faculty of Science & Technology,

Al-Neelain University. It is reported that these students have low standard of English. A mixed method of research design is adopted. A questionnaire consisting of 20 itemswas distributed to a sample of 100 second-year students to collect primary data. The sample was selected from different departments of the faculty including Chemistry, Medical Physics, and Microbiology. An interview wasconductedwith 7 teachers who were also selected from different departments. The data were analyzed via simple linear regression and qualitative data analysis techniques.

The findings of the quantitative data show that there is a relationship between motivation and achievement.

The findings of the qualitative data indicate that English must be a basic subject instead of a required course, university regulation of the minor subjects affects some students’ achievement in English. The recommendations of this study are English Language must be a basic subject instead of a required course or a minor subject, and English must be a language of instruction instead of Arabic.

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلي استطلاع آراء الطلاب والمعلمين حول اثر الدافعية في تحصيل طلاب كلية العلوم والتقانة لمادة اللغة الانجليزية . حيث اعتمد الباحث إتباع أسلوب منتخب بين الأسلوب الكمي والنوعي في تصميم الدراسة. تم توزيع استبيان علي عينة متاحة تتكون من 100 طالبا وطالبةلجمع البيانات من طلاب الفرقة الثانية – جامعة النيليين - كلية العلوم والتقانة من مختلف التخصصات مثل قسم الكيمياء ، الفيزياء الطبية ، الأحياء الدقيقة وقسم الالكترونيات. تم إجراء مقابلة مع 7 معلمين من مختلف تخصصات كلية العلوم. تم تحليل البيانات بإتباع الأسلوب الإحصائي والتفسيري. حيث أظهرت نتائج الدراسة، أن الطلاب لديهم رغبةفى تعلم مادة اللغة الانجليزية. بالإضافة إلي ذلك، أثبت التحليل ان مادة اللغة الانجليزية يجب أن تكون مادة أساسية في مناهج كلية العلوم والتقانة بدلاً من مطلوب ويجب أن تكون اللغة الإنجليزية لغة التدريس بدلاً من اللغة العربية التي تؤثر في تحصيل الطلاب لمادة اللغة الانجليزية.
