Degree : Ph. D. Date : January 2007. The purpose of this research is to depict the current picture of the electronic library and its role in the Sudan. Consequently, the study seeks to highlight the basic future needs for the establishment of the electronic library, coupled with necessary suggestions and recommendations for future improvements of the electronic library in the Sudan. The importance of the research is implicit in the evaluation of the current situation of the electronic library and the provision of relevant solution where it is needed. The researcher employs the survey and historical research methods to describe and analyze the problem. He uses the questionnaire, interview, and field visit for data collection. Furthermore, the researcher employs his personal experience, as a librarian, in convential and electronic libraries. This study is presented in four chapters. Chapter one states the research questions, objectives, importance, population, sample and data collection methods. It also discusses some previous relevant studies. Chapter two deals with the theoretical aspects of the electronic library. It covers the concept, requirements and transformation of the convential library into the electronic library. Chapter three dipects the current status of the electronic library in the Sudan as reflected by a sample of libraries in Khartoum State. Chapter four compares between the status qua of the electronic library in the Sudan and its theoretical model in an attempt answer the research questions. The conclusion presents the important results and recommendation: Among the most important results is the limited existence of the electronic library due to its limited financial support, basic infrastructure, manpower and services. The researcher emphasizes the need for the provision of the infrastructure and finance for the provision of an adequate electronic library service.
