Abstract

Abstract Republic of Sudan Ministry of Higher Education and scientific Research Elnaileen University Graduate College Faculty of Arts Information and libraries deparment Title : collection development in cultural centers libraries in Khartoum state Prepared by : Sara Ali Khalafalla Farah Albadry Supervised by: Abd elbage younis Ismail Degree: master of library an information sciences Date:2011 Page:134 This study aimed at recognizing the policy followed in developing library collections and its elements which is represented in its users, selection factors, acquisition methods and standards of collections evaluation, also to recognize the collections of the cultural centers libraries in Khartoum State ad to what extent they meet their users needs, and trying to find solutions for difficulties that hiders the process of collections development. The researcher uses the Case Study method, historical and statistical method. She uses the tools of questionnaire, observance and interview to collect data, whereas a questionnaire is designed to apply in the 7 sample libraries (national and foreign).The researcher carried out the data analysis based on frequencies and percentage. The study revealed the Findings: - Absence of a written acquisition policy in most of the sample libraries of the cultural centers in Khartoum State. - The apparent shortage of information e-sources.

Lack of sufficient and detailed budget for developing collections in the cultural centers libraries. The person who carries out collections selection is the librarian only. The lack of specialized library staff is the most prominent problem that faces the cultural centers libraries in Khartoum State. The study recommends: The necessity of constructing organizational structures and written policies that contribute to organize the libraries operations scientifically. The necessity of a written documented policy for collections development to guide selection, acquisition, weeding and evaluation. Allocation of independent budget. Establishing a plan of cooperation between cultural centers libraries. Keenness of recruiting qualified staff in libraries and information field.
