Effects of abacus training on the
Intelligence of children in Khartoum
State
Abstract
This study investigated the effects of Abaq (abacus) training on the
intelligence of children in Khartoum state. The study included (I43)
children in primary schools of Khartoum state. The percentage of
male is 48% and female is 52%, that according to classes proportion,
second class is 50%, and third class is 50%. The sample was divided
in two groups matched for score on intelligence, gender, class, and
urbanization. The number of the experimental group is (72) children,
they received abacus training on first level and they started training
on the second level. The control group is consisted of (71) children,
who did not receive any training. The intelligence ofthe two groups
was assessed by WISC-III before and afier abacus training. The study
has revealed that abacus training has a positive effect on enhancement
of the children performance intelligence. So there are significant
statistical differences between the two groups in performance IQ, the
trained group gained 5.3 point in the P-IQ attributable to the abaq
training. Also there are significant statistical differences in the Index
of Processing Speed, this mean the abacus training may used to
enhance P~IQ of child. While there are no significant statistical
differences in F-IQ, V-IQ, index of verbal comprehension, index of
perceptual organization, and freedom from distractibility. The
increase of IQ was explicated that the abacus training enhances fluid
IQ, working memory, stimulates the two hemispheres of the brain,
and excites the neural circuit basis for intelligence.
