Nurses’ Competencies toward Infection Control Measures In Neonatal Intensive Care Units In Dongola Hospitals 2021

Abstract

Background: Nosocomial infections are considered to be one of the important unsolved problems around the world. A lack of knowledge regarding infection control among nurses decreases compliance with these practices around the world. Objective: To assess nurses’ competencies toward Infection control measures in neonatal intensive care units. Methodology: This is a descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in two hospitals mainly neonatal intensive care unit in Dongola city; Dongola Specialized Hospital and Dongola Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. Total coverage sample from all available nurses who worked in NICU in the tow hospitals were recruited during the study period 2021 total was 18 nurse. Data were collected by semi structured questionnaire and Observational checklist designed for the study, data were analyzed by SPSS version 25 and presented using descriptive statistics in form of frequencies and percentage chi square used for association between study variables. Results: The study revealed that only 20.2% of nurses overall knowledge was good, no association between the participants’ demographic data, training and overall knowledge also 27.8% was found with P-value=0.00 The main challenges and obstacles facing the participants inn applying infection control measures in neonatal intensive is lack of staff unavailability of infection control guidelines in the hospitals in the study area. 27.8% & 22.2% respectively Most (70.7%) of nurse’s practice is good, In spite of having good practice about infection control, their overall knowledge is poor Conclusion &recommendation: The nurse’s knowledge and practice regarding infection control in nursery was inadequate. The current research recommended that conducting of special training sessions regarding infection control measures and principles in pediatric hospitals for nurses and establishing of special unit in every pediatric hospital concerning with training and evaluation of infection control.

مستخلص الدراسة الخلفية: تعتبر العدوى المكتسبة من المستشفيات واحدة من المشاكل الهامة التي لم يتم حلها في جميع أنحاء العالم. نقص المعرفة فيما يتعلق بمكافحة العدوى بين الكادر الصحي يقلل من الامتثال لهذه الممارسات في جميع أنحاء العالم. الهدف: تهدف الدراسة لتقييم كفاءات الكادر التمريضي تجاه تدابير مكافحة العدوى في وحدات العناية المركزة لحديثي الولادة منهجية الدراسة: تم إجراء هذه الدراسة الوصفية المقطعية في مستشفيين بشكل رئيسي وحدة العناية المركزة لحديثي الولادة في مدينة دنقلا (مستشفى دنقلا التخصصي ومستشفى دنقلا لأمراض النساء والولادة)، الدراسة تغطية شاملة لجميع اصطاف التمريض الذين يعملون في وحدة العناية المركزة لحديثي الولادة في المستشفيين أثناء الدراسة في الفترة م2021 (ثمانية عشر كادر تمريضي )، تم جمع البيانات عن طريق استبيان شبه منظم وقائمة مراجعة رصد مصممة للدراسة، وتم تحليل البيانات بواسطة الإصدار الخامس والعشرين من الحزمة الإحصائية للعلوم الاجتماعية وتقديمها بإستخدام الإحصائيات الوصفية في شكل الترددات ونسبة مربع كأي المستخدمة للارتباط بين متغيرات الدراسة. النتائج: أوضحت الدراسة أن 20.2٪ فقط من المعرفة العامة للكادر التمريضي كانت جيدة، ووجد ارتباط كبير بين البيانات للمشاركين والتدريب والمعرفة العامة أيضاً 27.8٪ مع قيمة الدالة الديموغرافية 70.7٪ من ممارسات الممرضات كانت جيّدة بسبب التجارب المعتادة، على الرغم من معرفتهم بالسيطرة على العدوى، فإن معرفتهم الشاملة لم تصل إلى المستوى الجيّد. تتمثل التحديات والعقبات الرئيسية التي تواجه المشاركين لتطبيق تدابير مكافحة العدوى في حديثي الولادة المكثفة في نقص الكادر التمريضي بنسبة27.8%و 22.2٪ عدم توفر الدلائل الإرشادية لمكافحة العدوى في المستشفيات في منطقة الدراسة. الخلاصة والتوصية: كانت معرفة الكادر التمريضي والممارسات المتعلقة بمكافحة العدوى في الحضانة غير كافية. أوصت الدراسة الحالية بعقد دورات تدريبية خاصة حول إجراءات ومبادئ مكافحة العدوى في مستشفيات الأطفال للممرضات وإنشاء وحدة خاصة في كل مستشفى للأطفال تتعلق بالتدريب وتقييم السيطرة على العدوى.
