Abstract

Abstract Elnelien University Graduate college Faculty of Arts Department of Libraries and Archives Title of the thesis: Planning for Using information Technology in the Library of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Prepared by : Amani Mohammed El-Khair Abd Alla Salih. Supervisor: Dr. Ali Salih Karrar Degree : M.A. in Library and Archives Date: \’~~°. This study aims to : - Describe the current situation of the library of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Khartoum. I - Plan for introducing the modern technology in the library system. - Plan for staff training with the new technology. - Plan to make this technology available and familiar for the users of the library in and outside the library. To conduct the study properly, a number of method have been used; such as historical, descriptive and statistical methods. This study consist of an introduction, three chapters, conclusion and a list of references. Chapter one (Using of Information Technology in Libraries), describes types of technologies used in libraries and its impact in the library SCl'V1C8S. Chapter two is about the requirements of good library services. The last chapter represents the case study of the dissertation.. It focuses on the library of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The study had come to a number of results and recommendations some of these results are: - Modem technologies in the form of computers and networks applications are not yet used in the library . - Financial resources are the main problem facing the library development especially its automation. - Using of information technologies in the library requires regular training programs for both stall and the users. - The study has also come to a number of recommendations: \- A technical committee should be fromed to study the modern information technologies requirements for the library, the committee should look into others experiences in select the suitable automation system for the library. Y — Using of local Area Network (LAN) to link the library with the national information Network and other libraries. Y — Using the internet to link the library with Sudan embassies. i — Training programs should be made for the staff of the library.
