The Crucialty of Deletion in English Language for the Media and General Use (Based on Transformational Generative Grammar)

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to highlight one of the most prominent areas of Transformational Generative Grammar, namely Deletion. It was carefully focused on by the renowned linguist Noam Chomsky, the godfather of this discipline. The thesis attempts to investigate the influence of deletion on the basic syntactic components of English language ranging from the word, phrase and clause to the text. The researcher adopted the descriptive analytical method, benefiting from a variety of sources such as: books, articles, researches and the internet. As many as twenty most frequently used types of deletion have been addressed with thorough consideration and detailed scrutiny. Exemplification and tree diagrams have timely been used to drive home the notions and clarify whatever vague corners tackled. The Media has received growing attention in the thesis, and not without reason, for the great roles it plays in modern life. The language of news reports, headlines and the relevant grammar constituted the core of this subject. Multiple headlines drawn from different news sources have been annexed for more justification. For more verification, a test was formulated and provided to 4th year students of English Dept. /Al Ahlia University (Omdurman). Finally, findings, recommendations and suggestions for further research were elicited.

مستخلص البحث تهدف هذه الدراسة الى إبراز دور قانون الحذف, أحد ابرز اهتمامات عراب النحو التحويلى التوليدى عالم اللغويات المعروف نعوم تشومسكى, و مدى تاثيره على المكونات الأساسية للّغة الإنجليزية بدا من الكلمة و العبارة, مرورا بالجملة, و إنتهاءا بالنص. إتبع الباحث المنهج الوصفى التحليلى و ذلك عن طريق جمع مادة البحث من الكتب و البحوث و الأوراق و المقالات و الشبكة العنكبوتية. تناول الباحث بالدراسة و التقصى عشرين نوعا من أكثر أنواع الحذف تداولاَ لدى مستخدمى اللّغة الإنجليزية. و قد تمت الإستعانة بالأمثلة و الرسومات التوضيحية المصاحبة لتثبيت الفكرة و دمج النظرية مع الواقع العملى لإستخدام اللّغة. تم التركيز على الإستخدامات المختلفة للحذف فى و سائل الاعلام نسبة لما تلعبه هذه الوسائط من دور ملحوظ فى الحياة المعاصرة. مع التركيز بصورة أكبر على اللّغة المستخدمة فى التقارير الإخبارية و عناوين الأخبار و القواعد التى تحكمها. و قد عززت الدراسة بالعديد من الأمثلة لعناوين مستقاة من مختلف مصادر الأخبار. تمت صياغة إختبار وعرضه على طلبة السنة الرابعة ( قسم اللغة الإنجليزية) بجامعة الأهلية (امدرمان) بغرض التأكد من مدى إستيعاب الدارسين لقانون الحذف و كيفية التعامل مع ضروبه المختلفة. فى الختام تم استخلاص النتائج و التوصيات بالاضافة الى مقترحات لمزيد من البحوث.
