    Mother Tongue Interference in Using Present Perfect Tense and Past Simple Tense. A case Study of Second Class Students at Al-Neelain University- the English Department

    Abstract Learning grammar of a second language is effected by several factors. This study investigates the impact of mother tongue on using the present perfect and past simple tenses in English language. In order to complete the research, the quantitative approach was used. A written test was given to a sample of 25 second- year students who study English at Al-Neelain University to collect the data. The data was analyzed via the SPSS statistic method. The findings of the study showed that learners’ mother tongue and inadequate competence of the second language influence the use of present perfect and past simple tenses. The study also stated that the use of mother tongue influences on Al-Neelain University students writing skills. In addition, the students misuse the present perfect and past simple tenses to the degree that they mistranslate English and Arabic sentences. Moreover, the findings showed that the students use the past simple tense more than the present perfect one. Finally, the results showed that the students make different types of errors when using English tenses. Considering how important it is to use English tenses, it is therefore recommended that research about mother tongue interference should be conducted مستخلص الدراسة (Arabic Version) تتاثر تعلم قواعد لغة ثانيه بعدة عوامل. تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التحقق من أثر اللغة الأم على إستخدام صيغة المضارع التام و الماضي البسيط باللغة الإنجليزية. للتحقق من هذا إتبع الباحث الاسلوب الكمي في تصميم الدراسه. تم توزيع إمتحان تحريري على عينة تتكون من 25 طالبا و طالبه من طلاب الفرقة الثانية بجامعة النيلين- قسم اللغة الإنجليزية لجمع البيانات. تم تحليل البيانات باتباع الأسلوب الإحصائي لتحليل البيانات.حيث أظهرت نتائج الدراسة أن إستخدام صيغة المضارع التام والماضي البسيط تتاثرباللغة الأم للدارسين وكذلك بعدم الكفاءة في التعامل مع اللغة الإنجليزية, مما يؤدي إلى التاثير في مهارة الكتابة لدى الدارسين. بالإضافة إلى ذلك, يسيء الطلاب إستخدام صيغتي المضارع التام والماضي البسيط بحيث يتم إستخدام صيغة الماضي البسيط أكثر من المضارع التام عند التعبير باللغة الإنجليزية والعربية. وأخيرآ, يرتكب الطلاب بعض من الاخطاء التي ليست لها علاقة بالدراسة عند إستخدام قواعد اللغة الإنجليزية عمومآ. نسبة لأهمية تعلم قواعد اللغة الإنجليزية, يوصي الباحث بإجراء بحوث و دراسات عن تاثير اللغة الأم في هذا المجال.
